Wisdom is Calling to You, Part 5

wisdom is calling to you

God knows that we process information differently. So, He got creative and had the writers of the Bible state the same concepts in various ways. For instance, Matthew 6:33 tells us to seek first the Kingdom of God and whatever provision we need will be added to us. Then in Proverbs the same principle is stated. We are exhorted to go after the Wisdom of God above all else and throughout the Book of Proverbs we are told the result of our seeking: prudence, knowledge, discretion, guidance, riches and honor.

To hammer the point home, God gave us a visual of Wisdom by painting her as female. Wisdom is called “she” many times. Women are nurturers and intuitive. In addition, when a man is in love with a woman, he treats her tenderly and with respect. He pursues her so that he can win her love. This is how God wants us to seek after wisdom.

The Lord wants us to go after wisdom first because she holds the keys to understanding life. The Lord wants to show us how to choose and keep friends, select the right mate, manage our finances and so much more. He wants to show us what in our lives needs to die and what needs to live. God wants us to have a rich, enjoyable life (see John 10:10) but this will never happen if we associate with people who constantly put us down or if we attend a church that does not feed us spiritually. We will never have the John 10:10 life if our mentality is wrong causing us to make decisions based on wrong beliefs. However, as we study God’s Word, the wisdom of God reveals what is wrong and what is right. When we choose the right way, we can receive and enjoy the fruit of wisdom.

We’ve already seen Wisdom portrayed as a woman. In today’s study of Proverbs 8, we will look at another personification.

22 The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.

23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.

25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.

27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:

28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:

29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:

30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;

31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

Wisdom created the world! Genesis 1:1 says in the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. The word “God” in that verse is the Hebrew word Elohim which is plural. All three personalities of the Trinity — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — are present here. What part of the Trinity does Wisdom represent? I Corinthians 1:30 tells us that it’s Jesus.

“But because of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who from God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness, and sanctification and redemption,”

This adds another dimension to Wisdom. We can now see that our Lord and Savior is right in the middle. It’s Him who calls to us. Will we answer?

32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord.

36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Proverbs 8 ends with an appeal to listen and seek out wisdom. We are told once again what the outcome of our actions will be: We will be blessed, wise, find life, and obtain favor from the Lord.

Lastly, we are warned of what will happen if we ignore Wisdom.
