What a Sunset and an Orange Tree Taught Me

God often speaks through the simple things of life. He once spoke to me through a sunset and an orange tree. Keep reading to find out what happened.

A Confusing Time

Recently evicted from my home, I stayed with a friend who lived down the street from the beach. One evening I walked there and climbed up on a big rock. I do not remember my thoughts as I watched the sunset. I can tell you that period was one of the most confusing of my then twenty-something years. I can tell you I prayed, and I know the Lord heard me. I can also say that observing God’s mighty creation was soothing. In ways I may not have understood then, God spoke through that sunset and strengthened me.

It Might Look Dead But it’s Not!

Our gardener pruned the orange tree in our backyard, stripping the branches of of their leaves. It was amazing to watch it spring back to life. Month by month, it grew and eventually doubled in size eventually yielding sweet, juicy oranges.

One day, the Lord impressed upon my heart the power of a seed. After the pruning, the tree appeared dead. Even still, energy existed and over time I saw the evidence. The Lord used the tree to show me that though areas in my life might seem hopeless, there is a pruning taking place. With proper care–reading the Word of God daily, prayer and fellowship with other Believers– fruit will appear more abundant than before.

That’s what a sunset and an ordinary orange tree taught me. What simple things is He using to speak to you today?

It’s so easy to get caught up in what we are going through to the point that we miss out on what God is saying. Don’t miss out! Be still and know that He is God. Relax and open your heart.
