Bible Study: The Road to Becoming Qualified to Lead OthersBible study is necessary for spiritual growth and to gain the knowledge to lead others. Leadership is not limited to heads of business or organizations. Parents, teachers, and supervisors are also leaders. If you stand in these capacities or in any other decision-making position, as a Believer in Jesus, being well versed in what the Bible has to say makes you effective.

The Bible tells us to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). Bible study is a command, not an option.

Some of the questions you might want to ask are…

What does approve mean?

What is a worker that should not be ashamed?

How do you rightly divide the word of truth?

Let’s discover the answers by looking at 2 Timothy 2:15 in other Bible translations.

The Voice

Timothy, do everything you can to present yourself to God as a man who is fully genuine, a worker unashamed of your mission, a guide capable of leading others along the correct path defined by the word of truth.

Expanded Bible

Make every effort [Do your best; Be diligent] to give [present] yourself to God as the kind of person he will approve. Be a worker who is not ashamed [or will not be shamed] and who uses the true teaching in the right way [correctly handles the true message/word of truth; or holds carefully to the true message/word of truth].

Amplified Bible Classic Edition

Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.

From these verses we learn that approve means preparation for your assignment, fully genuine. I also looked up this word in the Greek. Approve is also passing the necessary test, validation, verification.

Now, let’s look at the next question. What is a worker that should not be ashamed? The Living Bible tells us “Be a good workman, one who does not need to be ashamed when God examines your work.”

Are you doing the best possible job you can do? Are you excellent in your work? That would include taking care of your family, the tasks you do on your job and your service at church or other Christian organizations.

What is rightly dividing the Word of Truth?

The New Century Version of the Bible says “…uses the true teaching in the right way.

The Living Bible “…know what his Word says and means.”

The New Living Translation “…correctly explains the word of truth.”

We should make a point of finding out what the scriptures mean to explain them accurately. Many have so-called taught the Word of God and promoted error of one kind or another. I used to sit under a man who used the Word to further his own personal agenda.

Do you see how I used many translations to explain 2 Timothy 2:15? That is Bible Study! You can do this too if you don’t already.

Try using a parallel Bible that has different translations.

I like to use www.biblegateway.com the most. They have 208 translations in 72 languages. You can easily pull up several different versions of the Bible at one time and look at a verse or chapter side by side.

Continue studying the Bible or start if you don’t. Remember, 2 Timothy 2:15 is a command, not an option.

Love,

Karin
