The Battle of Jericho Reveals Jesus is in the Heat With You

Who fought the Battle of Jericho? Was it Joshua as a popular song suggests? Or, was it someone else? This question was posed to me recently. So, I decided to read this story again.

The Lord gave Joshua unusual instructions. The Israelites marched around Jericho once each day for seven days. On the last day, they gave a battle cry. The walls of Jericho came down. Let’s look at what came before this exciting event.

When Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up, and behold, a Man stood near him with His drawn sword in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, Are you for us or for our adversaries?

And He said, No [neither], but as Prince of the Lord’s host have I now come…Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, What says my Lord to His servant?

…the Prince of the Lord’s host said to Joshua, Loose your shoes from off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.

Joshua 5:13-15, Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

Notice that “Man” is capitalized.

Several commentaries (Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown, A Commentary, The New Bible Commentary, J.P. Lange, The Cambridge Bible, Charles Ellicott, and many others) note that the Man accepted Joshua’s worship because He was no mere angel but the Son of God Himself!

The Battle of Jericho reveals that Jesus is in the middle of the heat with you!

Jesus was in the middle of the Battle of Jericho! Notice His drawn sword!

Jesus then proceeds, in the next chapter, to give Joshua instructions. Would you have argued? I mean, marching around a walled city isn’t normally how you win a fight. But the Jews were obedient and the walls really did fall down.

This story is significant because it reveals that Jesus was there — right there in the middle of the heat of the battle. Not only that, He had SPECIFICS on how to defeat the enemy. I believe that Jesus is in the middle of your fight too. I believe He has **detailed information** on how you can conquer whatever is coming against you. But you will need to seek Him to find out what you are to do.

Joshua approached Jesus. Have you approached Him? Have you truly given God your cares or are you trying to figure out everything for yourself?

Are you worshiping? Joshua fell down on his face and worshiped. Worship is not something we do only at church. Put on some good Christian music and get your worship on at home, in your car or some other private place. Worship is important because it acknowledges God’s presence. It says, “Lord, I know you are here and that you are a mighty God. I know you are able to solve this problem. I trust You.”

Are you feeding on the Word? Jesus IS the Word of God (John 1:1). Feeding your spirit with the Word is how you become stronger. It’s how you become battle ready. Diving into the Word is how you receive the wisdom you need, it’s how you are able to hear the Lord speak to you.

Joshua approached Jesus. Have you approached Him? Have you truly given God your cares?

Obedience is key. Doing what God says is the only way to succeed. Stop fighting on your own. Turn to the Lord. Get into the Word. Pray it over your life.

The Battle of Jericho reveals that God is in the middle of the heat with you. You are not alone! Just as He gave the Israelites a plan to defeat their enemies, He will do the same for you. He will help you win YOUR Battle of Jericho.

Love,

Karin
